Grey’s Anatomy: For Sale

I found this week’s episode of “Grey’s” just so-so. It mainly focused on some problematic patients or issues with them, as well as problems with the new protocols. The staff was being monitored by an “eye in the sky” camera which gave feedback on cheaper ways to do things, as well as trying to avoid costly mistakes. Owen roped the financial doctor into a surgery hoping to somehow get her back in touch with her human side, while April and Derek worked to cut costs in other departments to save the ER.

In the end came the inevitable news, the woman wasn’t trying to save their hospital, she was trying to make it presentable to a buyer. She was a hospital fluffer basically. Again I think what this is all leading to is the millionaires club buying the hospital themselves, or becoming part owners with someone else.

The one case that irked me in this episode was the one involving the young kid who was possibly a Jehovah’s Witness. I say possibly as they seemed to lead to questions about him and his faith. A friend brought him in after a serious accident, he had a torn aorta, and they were about to prep him with blood when they found a Jehova’s Witness medal on him. This meant no transfusions or transplants, they’ve have to do bloodless surgery and use alternatives. The metal wasn’t around his neck, he wasn’t wearing it, but Yang thought perhaps it was thrown or broke during the accident. Later the friend who he spent most of his day with hanging out and working with mentioned that he never once mentioned his religion to him, and he felt it was odd that if he practiced a faith that he was willing to die for that it also wasn’t equally as important to share that information with him or anyone else . . . Hmmm . . . Yang’s intern was the only one questioning what this kid may have wanted, what he was feeling. Yang said all they could do was talk to his family, which were against any transfusions. They said it would be worse for him to live with such blood in him, and better for him to die without it. In the end, he did die. I just felt like we were left with so many questions, and the most important question “what would he want” was never asked of his family. Was he questioning his religion? Was he no longer practicing? Had he found another faith? This storyline really pushed my buttons, which of course is what it was meant to do.
