666 Park Avenue Premier Thoughts
So one of the new shows I’ve been looking forward to this season is “666 Park Avenue,” which premiered this weekend. I have to say I liked it a lot, and just hope that means it sticks around.
The show is about a building first and foremost, The Drake, who seems to be a character of its own? The building is owned by Olivia and Gavin Doran, and they “rent” rooms out. However it seems they more than rent them out, the tenants are signing over their souls to the building. The show opened with one of them trying to escape the building, but not being let go. Throughout the show we also saw Gavin making a deal with another resident. This man was being ordered to kill certain people, his payment was the return of his dead wife. While some clearly know the deal, it seems others either don’t know what is going on, or have yet to be brought in on a deal by Gavin and Olivia?
Enter Henry and his wife Jane. Henry is an up and coming lawyer, while Jane is an architect and a historian. They answer a job to be building managers on the side. The old one was the guy who we witnessed getting killed by the building earlier in the episode. Olivia and Gavin really wine and dine Henry and Jane in order to get them to take the job, gifts and a great apartment are pretty hard to turn down. Jane also becomes a bit infatuated by the building and its history and looks into it. There is a mysterious dragon symbol in the basement, and she locates photos of some bizarre social club that used to gather there in the olden days. Also there used to be a door down there, which has now been covered up . . .
Jane and Henry end up taking the job, especially after Gavin suggests Jane also help him restore the building to how it was in its glory days. How can they turn the deal down?
I definitely think that Gavin is going to end up being one of the men in the picture Jane found. He told David that he only bought the building in the 80s, but we know he’s been around for awhile.
I am hoping that if the show lasts, the one thing that won’t happen is that it will just get too weird and confusing. There were other stories going on as well, another couple seems to live in the building: a writer and his artist wife. The writer seemed to have this infatuation for a girl in the building across from them. Suddenly she had shown up to be the wife’s assistant, and then the wife suffered terrible accident in the building’s elevator. Oops!
I’m also worried about how long the show can last too. That’s something I seem to think about a lot as new shows seem to be built on premises that make going passed a single season seem difficult. How long can these stories go on? Obviously they can have endless characters come and go, but at some point Jane and Henry will end up learning what is going on.
I was wondering about the cteepy girl in the basement when she was fixing the lightbulb, if that may end up being the daughter that was supposedly killed in the car accident.

I don’t believe Jane & Henry are married, Gavin and Olivia asked them, and they said they were not.
I hope it sticks around for a while to get a fan base, but as you are, I am skeptical as well.
I like the spin on the name with the address really being 999!
