Once Upon A Time: Charmed To Meet You!
So the latest episode of “Once Upon A Time” told us the backstory of “Charming,” aka James aka David/John Doe in Storybrooke. We learned that James wasn’t always Prince Charming. He was a poor farmer living with his parents. Long ago his parents had made a deal with Rumple and gave David’s twin away to the king, who was sonless.
The real Prince had just recently died, and the King worked to cover this up to save the kingdom. The Prince was needed to slay a dragon for King Midas, who ruled the neighboring kingdom and in return would give their kingdom gold. James was brought in to play the part, while soldiers were to be the ones who slew the dragon. Things didn’t go as planned, the dragon killed the soldiers, and with fast thinking James slew the dragon and became a true hero.
The King decided to present James as his son and marry him to Midas’ daughter. James didn’t want to leave his family, but basically it was the only way to save them and their farm. He had to continue playing the part. We saw him journeying with his bride to bee in the carriage, which is where we first met Snow White and started learning of her past . . .
Back in Storybrooke, David had not been able to remember too much of his life with Katherine, but he did know he was drawn to Mary Margaret and wanted to be with her. Mayor Regina tried to convince Mary Margaret not to break up a marriage. Later David wanted to meet Mary by the bridge in the woods. Henry was certain he was remembering his true past, as the curse had not yet affected him. The mayor gave David bad directions to get there, sending him to Mr. Gold’s shop. He stopped in to ask for directions and was mesmerized by a figure of a windmill he felt he somehow owned once . . .
Later David went to meet Mary and told her that he had remembered his old life, he felt he had to honor his vows and try and make it work. The show ended with him going back to his wife, while Mary got drunk at the diner with “Doc.”
So I am assuming that the windmill was a clue to his past in fairytale land, his old family’s farm? At the same time he mentioned to Katherine that she “got rid of his windmills” on their lawn, it was one thing he seemed to remember. But which world was he remembering? It definitely seems like when he saw the windmill, the curse was enacted upon him, and now he remembers his fake life with Katherine.
If James had a twin in the other world, does he in this one? I would guess no, only because the twin died before the curse was enacted.
Will we ever meet the Kings in Storybrooke?
Next week is the mid-season finale of the show, which will be back in January with most of the other shows that have gone on hiatus.
Did the episode include the name of the twin who took over the role of Prince Charming? Just wondering since names are important to Rumpelstiltskin.
I’m also wondering if the objects in Mr. Gold’s shop are tied to the townspeople’s false memories. Perhaps if the objects are destroyed they can help people remember their past (for example, if the windmill was destroyed, would Prince C remember his first life?)
Did Emma quit working for the Sheriff after she found him sneaking out of the mayor’s home, or did she just say she’d no longer work the night shift? I found the sheriff’s behaviour (when he was found out) to be interesting. He seemed to feel guilt and shame, but possibly also relief that Emma knows. He comes off as the nice but weak guy, and not some power-hungry dude. Makes me think he’s the huntsman (who felt compassion for Snow White and let her go instead of killing her, secretly disobeying the queen).
One last thing: at first I thought the mayor was thinking about her dead father when she told David’s “wife” that she doesn’t have a second chance to be with someone she loved. But then I figured she’s talking about some romantic love she lost (apparently due to Snow White if I remember correctly).

I’m not sure who the queens old love is. I always thought maybe Snow stole him, but we know she didn’t seem to know Charming until after she was a rebel.
Unless she was in love with the real prince? But that wasn’t Snow’s fault either.
