Tonight’s Insane Cliffhangers On Grey’s
First off, I think this is the worst cliffhanger I’ve ever seen! What the hell, that was just mean!
First the good, Christina and Owen finally admitted they loved each other and would try and work things out, as they couldn’t bear to be apart.
The “huh?” Derek and Meredith got married via a post-it. They were too busy to go down to city hall, so they just had an “I do” ceremony between them and wrote vows on a post-it as their certificate. Um, odd, and not at all fulfilling, but quirky like them.
The not so happy – Baily doesn’t know if she can take the Pedes fellowship. Her rat husband Tucker told her if she did, they’d be over. He can’t take two more years of her working long hours as a resident when she could be an attending. On one hand I can see why he’d be frustrated, on the other . . . Tucker’s always been an ass.
Mark and Lexie had some tiff, and it seems Mark just went off and dumped her. WTH!
The horrible – George and Izzie are currently dead.
George enlisted to become a military doc, but was involved in a horrid car accident. He was brought in as a John Doe, as his face was so beat up. Later he signaled to Meredith, buy writing “007” on her palm, letting her know who he was.
Izzie meanwhile had the surgery, came out alive, knew who she was and who everyone else was, but had short term memory. She would forget everything she was told basically a minute or two after being told. They did not know if it was permanent. Toward the end of the show though, she began remembering, it was looking up.
Unfortunately George flatlined, then Izzie flatlined. Everyone was working to save both, even though Izzie had a DNR order she signed before surgery as she didn’t want to live on a ventilator if something went wrong. The final scene was of Izzie and George, clearly ghosts, meeting each other in the hospital corridor. Izzie was wearing the prom dress and was going down the elevator. When the doors opened, George was outside in military dress attire waiting!
I just can’t believe they did this. This is just torture. This is as bad as the “Private Practice” finale. No it’s worse, cause right now two people ARE dead. Will they survive? Will they come back next season? My guess is we won’t know for awhile, that the show and ABC are probably still making that decision. Katherine Heigl has gone on record saying she wants to stay, but I’m not sure about T.R. Knight.
P.S. I know this isn’t really a full well thought out post, I just wanted to get something up as I knew people were going to want to talk about this ending!
Just a quick thought from me before bed! I’m thinking they may not kill George off, even though T.R. Knight wants out. They could easily continue with the George character as someone else, seeing how beat up he was! They could pull a soap opera type actor switch. Lots more to think about with this, can’t wait to read what others think!

I love George and don’t want him to leave, but I would HATE to see the character recast. It’s just so cheesy and makes Grey’s seem like a day time soap. I think one of them died, and one survived but I’m not sure who. At first I thought Izzie was still alive but George was dead because she hadn’t “got off the elevator” yet, but I was thrown by their outfits (Denny-prom-dress and army attire). I also think its awful of ABC to kill someone off by having them dragged under a bus, and what about the girl who thinks George is her prince?? I can’t wait to hear the theories! I guess we’ll know more in the summer when they know what TR Knight and Katherine Heigl are doing.

I have only watched Greys half-interested for the last 2 seasons, but these past few episodes have really reminded me of the old Grey’s! I thought the wedding with the post-its was stupid, but I don’t think I have seen such a chilling death scene (elevator) since Six Feet Under (Nate and Dave on the beach if anyone used to watch 🙂 )
05.15.2009 at 12:35 am
My head is still spinning and my stomach still hurts, so I’ll save the Izzy and George comments for now. Can’t wait to read everyone’s thoughts!
Did Mark really dump Little Grey or is he playing the “game of girls” that the bus suvivor talked about with him as he worked on her arm? He made a comment about being a girl or something like that at the end. My TV station lost the voice twice and a few other times it was garbled.
I bet this finale gets more ” buzz and talk” action than any other show since Who Shot JR?!! People were more furious with the next season opener than the previous finale. The ratings reflected the anger. I know that dates me—61 and a proud Nan!!

Hmmm – I never liked Mark and Lexie. I like both the characters but I personally find the two characters have crappy chemistry as a couple. Also – Mark is boring now, I found him MUCH more interesting as a character when he struggled between A. being an a-hole and B. being in love with Addison. I think they will split him and Lexie up because SHE’S not ready for big commitment and they are in very different spaces, when we all thought he would flake out. And Mark will be upset and learn something about himself afterward lol. Are you posting more thoughts on this Dustin? I have so many questions about that elevator scene!
05.15.2009 at 12:42 am
The Elevator scene was weird. I didn’t get at all why George was in the army attire when he just joined. He had rank bars, medals, the works. That made no sense. Izzie’s prom dress I guess was an ode to Denny? Maybe George’s attire was a clue this was in someone’s head?
05.15.2009 at 12:47 am
Were people shocked that John Doe was George? I am a spoiler junky and I saw something that George was the guy in the promos so watching it with that made it obvious. I kind of wish I hadn’t – Ellen Pompeo was great when she found out!
05.15.2009 at 12:48 am
“After lots of waffling, Bailey admitted to Arizona that Tuck had told her that if she took the fellowship (and the long hours and training that would go with it), he would divorce her. Bailey ultimately decided to return to general surgery — because she was leaving Tuck over his cruel ultimatum, and she didn’t think her first months as a single mom were the right time to take on a new specialty. Poor Bailey.”
Found this on MSNBC write up—had no idea that Bailey was going to become a single mom. That was part of the show that the TV station lost the voice. WOW—Tuck has always been a jerk. Thought someone else might have missed this also.
05.15.2009 at 12:49 am
I must have missed that, I thought she didn’t make the decision? I’ll have to go back and watch the very end over again.
05.15.2009 at 12:54 am
Maybe the elevator scene meant Izzie was just seeing George, one of her hallucinations. This would explain his uniform since she knew he was going to Iraq. So they could both be alive, but she’s dreaming OR they weren’t saying anything about George’s state with this scene. I’m not good with ghost stuff!!! And Lexie – I knew it was George when he looked at Mer in the exam/trauma room, you could really tell it was TR and I never look at spoilers. You could tell by the face, and for a (stupid) second I thought they were just using the same actor twice, but then they didn’t show George at all so I knew.
05.15.2009 at 12:54 am
If they kill Izzie and keep George (see previous thought) then George is going to become a patient of the hospital as well like Izzie has been and that seems kind of redundant. You know, showing the doctor as a patient thing. I like George more than Izzie so I want him to stay, but watching Alex lose Izzie is heartbreaking too. And watching George die this way (if he does) is disturbing! Quick question if there are any medical people on here – how would a resident’s program be disrupted by time in Iraq? Would it count as part of the 7 year program or be treated like a break? I HATED the story with George failing, and I hate that they keep keeping from being a great surgeon.

The post it wedding made me really annoyed too. If you are not into weddings but want a legal union to make it official/protect yourself/commit for life after breaking up all the time then just go to city hall some day and do it. They know they love each other. But if you want a Susan Sarandon/Tim Robbins set up (which I’m totally for if thats your thing) then why the fake wedding and saying you got married?? Just say you are life partners or engaged or something. I mean its 2009, straight people have options to do either one. If they are soo twisty and unconventional why bother saying they are married when they could just call each other partners or something? I’m curious to hear peoples thoughts on this.
05.15.2009 at 1:13 am
this is my two cents
I think george is dead. he had already decided he wanted to be a hero (hence the iraq move) and he “died” saving that girls life. So, it makes sense for him to be in “heaven” wearing the uniform, because it shows his honor. he died so that girl could live. Izzie is going to the next level (aka death) but she doesn’t get off because she knows she wants a life with alex but hasnt had it yet. The prom dress would be a symbol of Denny which she said last week is her own symbol of death. Denny wasn’t there to “take her”. Instead, i think George was there to save her. She didn’t get off the elevator, but george was already there waiting. I think he’ll send her back down. The 007 thing tripped me out. i read NO spoilers (for once) so i’m super surprised. i can’t even comprehend what happened. They did this before when meredith almost drowned and she saw denny and her mom. i think they may be doing it again. time will tell, but as someone else mentioned this is the best cliffhanger since “who shot jr?”
05.15.2009 at 1:30 am
Maybe they will let George live but he won’t be able to be a surgeon because he shattered his arm. So he will be a doctor but somewhere else.
05.15.2009 at 1:33 am
Stephanie–good thought about George already being on the “other side” of the elevator–interesting “staging” of his person! He was the one who told Izzy that she already knew what she had to do, so is he there to remind her to fight for her life? I don’t want either of them to die though because I like the characters.
I’m really enjoying everyone’s thoughts about the show. It’s amazing how we each perceive scenes differently.
05.15.2009 at 3:24 am
WV, yeah i thought about that.
how george had told her she knew what to do.
and the looks they gave eachother at the elevator, it seemed as if she was asking him what to do and he was telling her to go. he seemed really content and at ease with where he was at but she seemed unsure and she started to get more and more upset.
05.15.2009 at 6:41 am
Ok I just found it annoying that Meredith kept complaining that there was never anytime to go to city hall because everyday was like this yet a few weeks back Derek and a bunch of them were all drunk in the afternoon and she kept leaving work to go talk to him, so give me a break no time such a cop out, I really am hating this reluctance to let characters get married on shows lately, on the office they won’t let them get married but make Pam pregnant, like what the heck is that (unrelated I know just reminded me how annoyed I was at that, lol)
05.15.2009 at 10:21 am
ooh good analysis Stephanie!
A note, Ausiello posted an interview with Shonda Rhimes. Basically she won’t say if anyone dies, and nobody’s contracts have been renewed for next season yet it seem.
05.15.2009 at 10:56 am
WTFH!! I don’t get on here often anymore, but that episode had me screaming at the end! I don’t want either character to go, but I don’t want George to not be a doctor anymore. Izzie needs to live so Alex doesn’t go back to being a jerk or go into some kind of funk like Izzie did when Denny died. And did you see Alex’s face when they were all there trying to save her? OMG! I have never seen such emotion! Seatle Grace will not be the same if they kill of either of these characters.
05.15.2009 at 11:05 am
I missed the first 30 minutes. Why did Callie have to remove a healthy leg from that guy?
Couldn’t believe the ending – I want them to keep George (weren’t they setting something up with the lady he rescued?), but want him to be given some decent story lines, rather than the dribble he’s had the past two years.
BTW, great job on Izzie’s baldness – looked very realistic. CGI?
05.15.2009 at 11:16 am
DNA- Callie removed the healthy leg because the patient asked her to so that he could be fitted with a prosthetic and return back to Iraq. He was having pain in his leg and no doctor could find where the pain was coming from so he just wanted to remove it. She did it reluctuntly. I think he comments about being the hero in Iraq helped convince Geaorge to join the army.
05.15.2009 at 11:30 am
He was wounded in combat and had severe pain in his leg to the point it was debilitating. No pain meds or any therapies were helping. He wanted it off so he could get a prosthetic and return to Iraq to be of some kind of help (I would assume he would be discharged if he had his leg cut off!)
05.15.2009 at 11:30 am
I am hoping we get a real legally binding wedding next year, but it looks like there was a point in the post-it wedding.
SPOILER
Again from the Shonda interview, it’s said that something happens to make it an issue. I’m thinking one will be called to testify on the stand against the other?
05.15.2009 at 12:06 pm
Ok here is something I just read on yahoo’s news about grey’s that basically says George is dead, find it strange that they took him to be dead when we were all unsure, do they know something we don’t? Or are they just being coy (calling him dead because he flatlined)?
“He never made it. In the episode’s crowning twist, O’Malley was revealed to be the unrecognizably bloodied, injured John Doe who had pushed a woman out of the path of a bus and been struck by it himself. He died a hero in Seattle.”

I think they will revisit the wedding topic b/c I would not be surprised if Ellen Pompeo’s pregnancy is written into the show. What do you all think?
Tucker is a rat…poor Bailey, after all that work to get into pedes, she had to give it up b/c she wouldn’t be able to do that and raise her little boy.
I think Mark and Lexie broke up, but I think they will get back together next season.
I’m not sure how I feel about Izzy and George. Honestly, if the actors want to be out of the show, then I think they should go. However, I don’t really want them to be killed off…seeing Alex cry over Izzy just broke my heart and I don’t want her to leave him and I hate to see poor George die, whether or not he wanted to be a hero!
05.15.2009 at 4:07 pm
I’d hate to see either one of the characters go, but I LOVED the storyline. I thought it was a good storyline for George and a great setup for a storyline if he makes it. I also loved the ending with the elevator. I hope the both stay around next season though.
05.15.2009 at 8:48 pm
When Shonda discussed this episode, she never said “john doe = George”, she just kept saying “TR was great under that makeup etc”. Wonder if there is any possibility it wasn’t really George. Just a thought because the way she worded the interview reminded me of the way she called the 100th episode as MerDer’s wedding day when they didn’t get married.
05.15.2009 at 9:12 pm
Pam, I thought the same thing about George and the interview! But I dont think that could have happened because it would mean Meredith made a pretty big mistake and I can’t see Shonda doing that to that character.
05.15.2009 at 9:18 pm
Wow. Just finished watching Grey’s tonight. I must agree with many of the comments on here – by far, that was one of the most insane and heart breaking season finale episodes in many years!
1st – Little Grey and McSteamy – I am proud of Mark for FINALLY growing up, but he has to slow down. Lexie and Mark just started dating this season, and he just recently announced the relationship to his friends. On another note, I would really like to see Mark buy a home and truly settle down – it’s just too soon to move Lexie in the McSteamy Mansion.
2nd – Bailey – What is going on with Bailey and Tucker is truly sad, but I really think the writers have been dragging this on for far too long. Honestly, I didn’t expect them to still be together. I admire Bailey for making 2 right choices – choosing general surgery to be able to spend more time with her son and leaving Tucker for being a complete ASS!
3rd – Christina and Owen – I’m still not sold on this. Dustin, I even think you mentioned this relationship as one of your favorites, and I absolutely LOVE Christina. But I can’t seem to get on-board with Christina and Owen. I think it really comes down to his character. I don’t like him, and I’m not sure why. I miss Burke.
4th – Callie and Arizona – I love these two characters, but they need to spend more time getting to know each other! Perhaps that would mean a few less fights?
5th – Mer and Der – I love them. I love the fact that – FINALLY – Meredith seems to be somewhat normal…somewhat capable of being in an actual relationship. But after all these years, we get a post-it note for a wedding? I know it makes sense for these two to have a simple wedding. A justice of the peace with Christina and Mark as witnesses would have been perfect. As fans, we were robbed!
6th – Izzie and Alex – Over the years, there have been moments where Alex Karev has been able to act enough like a human being that I have actually cared about what happened to him in that moment. However, those moments have been few and far between. This episode showed a wonderful, vulnerable side of Alex that we don’t see enough. He had me on the verge of tears…several times. I just hope Izzie makes it through. I would hate to see the end of her wonderful character, and I’m scared what her death would do to Alex.
Finally – 007 – WOW. I had no idea. Until he “wrote” that number on Meredith’s hand, I had no idea. I am so used to not seeing him very often that I honestly didn’t notice that he hadn’t been shown on-screen for most of the episode. It was awful. It reminded me of Gant’s death on ER in the 3rd season, I believe. Except – while I liked Gant – he was simply a supporting character for only 1 season. This was heart breaking. George – Georgie – O’Malley!! This can’t happen, yet it appears to be inevitable.
I agree with most of the predictions above. I think George not being on the moving elevator means he’s already gone. He’s waiting for Izzie. But I think Izzie’s going to have a chance to push that button and close that door. She’s going to have a chance to turn around…much like Meredith in the drowning episodes.
Unfortunately, it appears for certain that one of the two characters won’t return next season. That’s incredibly sad. These are two people who have worked their way into our hearts. I know (and want) the show must go on, but it won’t ever be the same.
05.17.2009 at 2:38 am
I know it’s a hospital setting, and that there will be a lot of death involved but I think Shonda needs to stop with the near death experiences. It’s getting old.
05.17.2009 at 10:22 am
I cried so hard. My 5 yo snuggled up next to me and asked me what was wrong. He sat there next to me from the moment we learned it was George till the end. I never cried so hard watching a TV show.
05.19.2009 at 11:48 am
Does anyone else think that the publicity of Katherine Heigl and TR leaving was all just a stunt so that it would make people believe that their characters may actually die? Just a thought.
05.19.2009 at 3:10 pm
