Grey’s Anatomy: Izzie’s Mom Visits, So Does Thatcher

So last night’s “Grey’s,” it was good, but I don’t know . . . . It was clearly overshadowed by the “Practice” finale which came after it.

Izzie’s mom tore into the hospital like a tornado. Bailey called her, thinking Izzie might need her mom, only to realize her mom made things worse. She meant well, but basically as Izzie put it . . . her mom is limited. She’s one of those women whose kids have to look after her, which is not what Izzie needs right now. The mom was sure Izzie would be fine, because her phone psychic told her. Bailey lied to her, telling her the latest scan was good. It wasn’t though, and Izzie had to go in for more surgery.

Thatcher returned, he was trying to get sober and was doing his steps. He needed to make amends, and The Chief asked Meredith and Lexi to hear him out as a favor to him. Lexie forgave her dad, Meredith coldly said she was happy for him, it seemed he wanted to get better, she wished him luck . . . then she left. Later Lexie convinced Mark to meet her dad, though Mark was not happy about it as dad’s usually don’t like him.

Callie contemplated lying to her family, saying she broke up with Arizona. That way she’d get her trust fund back. It seems she was having money issues and couldn’t afford rent. Arizona said she’d still be with her if she lied, but Callie refused. She said her family is supposed to love her for who she is, unconditionally.

Christina confronted Owen when he kept being short with her and saying “Have a nice day” and “You take care.” He told her his therapist gave him a list of short things to say to her, but what he wanted to say he couldn’t . . . because it wouldn’t be fair to her. He knew what he did to her, he had to stay away from her so she could move on to. In tears she told him to “take care now” and ran off.

Meredith and The Chief went head to head over a case of an abused woman and daughter, the daughter who ended up shooting the father 28 times . . . she was like 5 years old! Meredith felt the mother needed to leave the husband, that it shouldn’t be up to her 5 year old to protect them from her father, that was the mother’s job. The Chief felt she was out of line and said he would suspend her if she didn’t stop.

Meredith ended up blowing up at The Chief, telling him that he treated her differently than all the others, she wanted to be treated the same. He denied it, but Derek ended up pointing out to The Chief it was true . . he was always butting into Meredith’s personal life. The Chief eventually sat down with Meredith. He basically apologized for the affair with her mom, for not looking out and protecting her when clearly neither of her parents were doing it, for letting her be a neglected child.

My Thoughts
The stuff with The Chief and Meredith was the best part of this episode. The Chief has been getting on my nerves a lot lately, and Meredith was right when she lashed out at him. Kudos to Derek for also pointing out to The Chief how he basically acts like Meredith’s father. I was happy to see The Chief apologize to Meredith for the past and what happened, especially when her own father’s apology was basically a big pile of steaming crapola.

The Christina and Owen stuff was just heartbreaking, no other words for it really!

The one thing that I didn’t get was how we were supposed to believe Callie was so poor without daddy’s money. If she had med school bill loans and all, okay that I could see. But we were told in the previous episode her dad paid for it all, that she had a trust fund, her family was loaded. So for her, a surgeon, to supposedly not have enough money for rent . . . Yeah not getting that one.

  1. Hubbie and I were talking about the Callie cash flow thing too. I think she is still a third year resident like Bailey. I remember she was Chief Resident until Bailey took over the position. I think Bailey and Callie are just a year ahead of the whole group, who are second year residents (with Lexie and crew being Interns, in their first year of residency). Anyways, lol. Residents usually make 30-40k a year only. Which is decent money. But she’s living with Christina in Burke’s swanky doctor’s pad. So I’d assume rent is high. Christina’s family seems to have money as well, I think. Also, I think med school and college loans are deferred until the end of residency. But she’s got rent, half the bills, and food/clothes/drinks, etc. Anyways, that’s what we were thinking.

  2. At first I was thinking the same thing…HOW COULD SHE NOT AFFORD RENT. But then I thought the same as you guys. residents don’t make that much money. And with her living in Burke’s place, I am sure the rent there is $$$$$ !!!!! Plus, if you are use to living on a certain amount of money, it is hard to figure out how to live on less income. So maybe she over spends her money.

  3. I thought they had moved out of Burke’s place. Wasn’t there an episode where Izzie was apartment hunting and showed Christina the ad in the paper thinking they could get a place together. But Christina and Callie wanted the apartment for themselves. Maybe I am wrong and they didn’t move after all

  5. They did move out of Burke’s place and live like right across the street from the hospital. There was a scene with Hunter asking Cristina how she got to the hospital so fast and she said I live across the street. So I am sure that they are paying a pretty nice premium for the location. But I am also thinking too that maybe Callie really doesn’t know how to handle her money because wasn’t she living in the basement of the hospital for a while when we were first introduced to her character? Why would someone who has a trust fund live in the basement?

  6. I seem to remember that Callie slept in the hospital basement because she said she was at the hospital all the time anyway, and no commute meant more time to study.

I remember thinking that she was such a neat quirky character, but her character’s been pretty inconsistent since then.

  7. When Callie was staying in the basement at the hospital, I think she was living in one of her father’s hotel suites.
