Ugly Betty: Ugly Byron!

Ugly Betty: Ugly Byron!

In the latest episode of “Ugly Betty,” Betty and Hilda were fighting over the best care for their father. Betty decided she could do her work and take charge of her dad’s health care, which of course meant she was bound to fail.

By the end of the episode, Betty realized she couldn’t balance both work and family, she told Amanda she was moving out and back home. I hate this! I have actually loved the relationship Betty and Amanda have formed the past few episodes. As it was commented to me, basically they turned Amanda into a human being as she’s been living with Betty. I agree, and I like it. I liked that Amanda was becoming more than the snotty receptionist who just insulted Betty. They were becoming friends, much like Betty and Marc were because of Yeti. I hope the show does not condemn Amanda back to her former role on the show.

Daniel and Molly went to the Caribbean for a vacation and just returned, as did Conner and Wilhelmina from the Swiss Alps. Conner and Willy couldn’t get enough of each other, and Willy’s work and meetings were being sacrificed for some afternoon delight. This left Marc trying to pick up the pieces. He made a major pitch to a client that Willy was too pre-occupied to remember, and he saved the account. Willy treated him like garbage, saying it was his job to make her look good, as well as being stepped on and take the blame for her when needed. She claimed to the client that Marc failed to come and get her, which he tried over and over to do. I felt so bad for Marc, I thought he was going to quit on the spot. Later Willy even realized she needed Marc and threw him a bone, letting him take an ad meeting with a client. She claimed they bored her and she would let him handle it, but it was her way of apologizing and thanking him.

Meanwhile Daniel’s vacation photos were accidentally sent to Suzuki St. Pierre, and he feared the gossip queen would expose him and Molly to the world, creating major internal strife at Mode. Daniel and Molly had not yet told Conner about them. Betty did some sleuthing, with the help of Amanda, and she tracked Suzuki down to a house in Jersey. In one of the best twists of the show, Suzuki was really one Byran Woo: straight man, husband and father of two! He couldn’t find work as himself, so he invented the gay dishy diva of Suzuki St. Pierre and people couldn’t get enough of him. This actually had me in stitches, I’ll never be able to look at Suzuki the same way again.

Bryan gave up the photos, realizing some secrets needed to remain a secret. Unfortunately the paparazzi caught a photo of another couple vacationing in the Caribbean, and in the background was Molly holding hands with a man. Daniel was cut out, but Conner saw the photo and realized Molly had another man. Uh Oh!

Connor is clearly going to be on a man-hunt, so to speak, for this guy. I’m not sure if he really has the right to be angry given he’s been shacking up with Willy every five minutes. Even before he and Molly ended things, the relationship was dead. He was too into his work to give her the time and attention she deserved. He’s much better suited with someone like Willy. I also fear that once again, Daniel will take the brunt of the fall for this when Willy was the one scheming to get Conner and pushing Daniel to seduce Molly (for her own selfish reasons).

Ghost Whisperer: Sam I Am

Ghost Whisperer: Sam I Am

Posted by Dustin on 01.24.2009 at 5:20 pm

This week and last week’s episodes of “Ghost Whisperer” dealt in part with Sam finding Nicole, the woman he strung along for 10 years and was finally going to marry. Sam/Jim took a road trip to find her and Melinda made excuses to come along, saying she just happened to be going to a nearby town to pick up some antiques.

For the first episode Nicole basically ignored Sam’s calls, not wanting to have anything to do with him, suggesting they both moved on. Oh no, it couldn’t be that easy. She finally showed up at the end of the episode, realizing he really did have amnesia and didn’t know her.

In the second episode Nicole came back to Grandview to get to know the new Sam, and she liked what she saw. Basically he was a whole new Sam, one she always wanted, one she didn’t want to let go. He was JIM! Sam felt that Nicole wanted her, and maybe he should give things a shot with her. He still couldn’t explain all these feelings he had that didn’t match up with the old Sam, for example this feeling he wants children. The old Sam didn’t want them. Both Eli and Melinda tried to convince him not to settle, that perhaps Nicole wasn’t the one for him. He however didn’t want to let an opportunity pass by. Up until the very last second, the show played it out that he was going to leave with Nicole. However he didn’t, he stayed for Melinda.

I was so aggravated by both of these episodes! I really thought for a moment Sam/Jim would leave and we’d have to wait a few months before he ever decided to return to Melinda. At this point I just wish Melinda would tell him the truth, or he would take Eli’s suggestion and undergo past life regression.

Last week’s ghost story actually had to do with Delia. Old high school friends dropped by, bringing the ghost of an old stoner from school with them. She haunted both Delia and Ned in the episode. It was actually a fun episode in which Eli was the one to help them out, and Ned and Delia experienced a haunting first hand without Melinda around. It was one of the first episodes that I began to warm up to Eli . . . though he’s still no Payne!

This week’s ghosts were dumped in a lake by a mortician who pretended to cremate their bodies. His furnace broke and he was running out of money. They had become angry spirits, waiting for him to die from cancer to take their revenge. Melinda helped them all, and the mortician ended up joining “The Watcher” spirits. We finally got information on who the watchers were. They were spirits who because of their actions in life, felt they were not yet worthy to cross over and had good to do on earth still. The mortician joined them until he too felt he was clean enough to go into the light.

I was kind of disappointed in that explanation. I was expecting them to be bigger and play into some grander haunting storyline for the season. Perhaps they still will, but as of yet the Jim/Sam storyline seems to be the focus. I am hoping at some point we’ll get a big bad ghost storyline as we have in past season. Then again, last season’s storyline was so screwed up with the whole Dad/Half-Brother storyline that who knows, maybe we’re better off?

No no, not THAT Hillary, Hilary Duff! US Magazine reports that Jennifer Love’s real life BFF is taping her show today. She’ll play a woman of mystery involved in a man’s death in the episode “Thrilled To Death.”

You might also recall that Hilary signed on with NBC to star in her own show on the peacock network next year. The show has been developed and is tentatively called “Barely Legal,” in which Hilary plays a genius lawyer. According to a press release, it’s loosely based on the true story of Kathleen Holtz who passed the California Bar Exam at the age of 18.

Grey’s: Giving Up The Ghost

Grey’s: Giving Up The Ghost

Posted by Dustin on 01.23.2009 at 7:34 pm

So first up, let’s deal with the major and much welcomed development. We finally learned that Denny hadn’t come for Izzie, as in to be her ghost lover. He had come for her, as in to take her over to the other side. Izzie finally realized something was wrong with her. Hallelujah, some progress! However it’s not exactly the resolution spoiled about. I was expecting Denny to seriously be a hallucination caused by whatever is wrong with her. It seems he really is a ghost come to cross Izzie over. So basically we really are seeing a Ghost-mance? Grrrrr! I loved Denny’s character, but at this point he’s just got to go. At this point I feel like they are doing this hoping for some Emmy noms.

The serial killer and the little boy story had me on edge most of the show. Meredith continued to sympathize with the killer and even pulled Baily in on her scheme to let him die so the little boy could have his organs. Baily even tried to stop Shepard from saving him, but realized she had crossed a line. A line Meredith didn’t see. Hmmm, that has me a bit worried for Meredith’s future honestly. However when the killer seemed a bit too interested in the fact that Meredith was dating McDreamy, well that’s when I began to realize he was just a sick $#%#$^% playing a game. When Christina showed up, finding out what Meredith did, suddenly the killer was crying “I don’t want to die!” Yup, he played Meredith like a fiddle, later admitting he wanted to break her and her boyfriend up, it was a game, he got a kick out of it. To think even I was having some sympathy for him last week!

Meredith ended up trying to show him compassion, though he didn’t deserve it, and went to his execution. She came back bawling, which was when Derek had Christina talk to her. It looks like these too might finally be making up. As Derek told her this week, he knew she had something she probably wanted to talk to Meredith about. She did, Owen!

I have to say I loved that Derek did not just run from Meredith. I was so sure he’d see what happened with the killer as some reason they shouldn’t be together, but he didn’t. He even told her that his mom loved her, that she thinks she’s good for him. Dare I say we are finally over the break-up hump in their relationship?

Oh the little boy, at the last minute, received organs to save his life. Seriously, I thought I was going to curse up a storm. After two weeks of kids dying on “Private Practice,” well I couldn’t take another one!

Finally the humorous story, well not really, was Little Grey and McDreamy. Durring some on-call room sex, well Mark sprained his McPenis! Ow ow ow ow! A very serious thing actually, as if you don’t treat that immediately, you risk never being able to use it again. The other interns were on the hunt to find out who fractured his McPenis, and Lexi was clearly embarrassed. Sadie figured it out and took the fall for her among the others. I have to say, I hope this little fracture doesn’t break their relationship. They really are cute together and I’d like to see it continue. Though I do fear Meredith will flip when she finds out.

Private Practice: Pregnant and Married!

Private Practice: Pregnant and Married!

Last week Charlotte’s dad, “Big Daddy” died. She had to go home as he was on his death bed and Cooper flew in to support her. This act brought them back together, on top of all the recent past episodes in which they were getting closer again.

However in this week’s episode, Charlotte kinda flipped out and proposed to Cooper. However she didn’t want a big wedding, she wanted to marry him in Vegas, the next day. He eventually told her that he wanted to marry her, but she was still grieving, and her wedding day should be the happiest day of her life. She was angry and stormed off. I have to say, I’m worried about Charlotte. I get the feeling they are building her character to either a complete mental breakdown or to revealing some kind of very serious personality disorder. She’s very hot-n-cold.

Last week Violet finally got busted for dating two guys. She also got a bit of an infection/rash from too much sex! Pete flipped out on her, but Sheldon stuck by her. These two kept dating, only for Violet to learn she was pregnant and didn’t know who the father was. Oh boy!

This week Pete and Sam dealt with a dying cancer patient who wanted to end his life. Pete wanted to help him, Sam didn’t. In the end though Sam was present as the patient injected himself with morphine. Sam and Pete watched him and reflected on their own lives, as the guy had no family and basically was dying alone. Pete feared that could be him one day. You could see the writing on the wall, he is going to try and make things work with Violet. She’ll have 2 men after her and not know which is the baby’s daddy.

Addison and Kevin continued to have issues last week, and Addison kissed Wyatt, who asked her out on a date. This week Kevin suspected something wrong, and eventually she told him about the kiss. She also dumped him, saying that kiss was the only time she hadn’t had a knot in her stomach. Ouch, poor Kevin, and I guess so long? Then Addison went to see Wyatt, only to find her brother having sex with Naomi in Wyatt’s office! He then welcomed his sister to his new office.

So this I have to say confused me. I get that her brother is coming to work for the enemy, Pacific Welcare. However is he taking over Wyatt’s office space? Is Wyatt gone now too? It would be classic for Addison to dump Kevin only to find Wyatt left town as well!

Grey’s: A Mother And A Ring . . Oh Another Lesbian Too

Grey’s: A Mother And A Ring . . Oh Another Lesbian Too

Posted by Dustin on 01.21.2009 at 9:37 pm

So in last week’s episode, Meredith continued to feel sympathy for the serial killer, even though everyone else didn’t. I don’t know why, but with his whole “brain” issue they kept going on and on, I expected Meredith to discover the reason he went nuts and killed people was some brain tumor. It didn’t happen.

Meanwhile Baily’s patient’s organs were failing and Arizona just wanted to wait for more organs. The serial killer offered his up, but Derek was so fixated on keeping him alive so he could be executed that he wouldn’t listen to Meredith. The boy eventually got some organs, but in surgery another problem was spotted, basically half his intestines had died and he had 24 hours to get even more organs for a transplant.

Meredith went to the killer, who was determined for some reason to help the boy. She told him that should trauma happen to the back of his head, where his brain was exposed, nothing could save him. She left him alone and he proceeded to smash his head on the bed board. This was just gross to watch. I mean I know the man did some bad things, but watching him do that to himself made me feel sorry for him!

Derek’s mom appeared in this episode played by the amazing Tyne Daly. She made this whole episode! I seriously hope they bring her back. In fact I could totally get into her being brought in as a regular cast member. Meredith took Izzie’s advice to impress her, sporting a pony tail that would make Debbie Gibson proud and trying to be bubbly and happy. Eventually she told Derek’s mom that the pony tail wasn’t her, mom’s never like her, she’s dark and moody and she feels sorry for sympathy killers.

Oh yeah, Derek’s mom loved her! She told Derek that he needed her to balance him out, he was black and white whereas Meredith was grey (haha, get it!). She gave him his grandmother’s engagement ring to give to Meredith!

Christina and Meridith’s icy relationship began to melt as Christina finally talked to her, though only to tell her that her pony tail was stupid. Still it was a start.

Derek wasn’t the only one getting advice from his mom. Mark went to her about dating Lexie. She thought Lexie was charming and frankly probably more mature than Mark, so the age difference didn’t matter! Can I say again how much I love Tyne Daly and want the show to find ways to bring her back.

Owen asked Christina out, but was so petrified he showed up drunk at her place. What is with all my people on ABC shows getting sloshed on or before their dates? The worst part, Christina was looking smoking all done up for Owen. I don’t think I have ever seen her look more beautiful on this show than in this episode.

Finally the 2nd best thing about this episode? Izzie realized she couldn’t date a dead guy and dumped Denny! Woo hoo! Too bad he’s supposed to be sticking around till March . . .

Oh and now for a spoilerish tid-bit, which I must admit is pissing me off. Ausiello (EW) posted today that Callie would start developing feelings for Arizona! What what what? Is this a joke? I hope he was confusing Arizona and Sadie’s character and made a mistake, but I fear not. The question asked was whether the show might keep her around, and he basically responded it looked like she was being groomed for Callie’s latest love interest. I love Callie, but at this point I feel like the show just needs to fricken decide on a love interest for her and stick with one!

Brothers and Sisters: Green Is The Color

Brothers and Sisters: Green Is The Color

Posted by Dustin on 01.20.2009 at 10:35 pm

This post contains two weeks of episodes. Recaps as well as my thoughts on each story. All in all I really loved these past two episodes! I’ve been waiting for drama on this show and these two episodes brought it.

Sarah and the boys found themselves in troubled. Ethan and Kyle ( I think that’s the other guys name, or for some reason that’s what I think it is at the moment) told her they needed about 120K for server upgrades and code improvements for the website. The problem? Getting it and getting it fast, as they had tech conference coming up that they had to impress investors at. Kitty, with nudging from Nora, offered the money. Sarah got upset, not wanting a handout, feeling like she had failed again, but in the end compromised and allowed Kitty to co-sign a 2nd mortgage on her house to get the money. Kitty had the collateral the bank needed to give it to Sarah.

The conference was a hit, and a big named investor was interested. They had to impress him by throwing a swanky party at some hotel for him. The party is where a lot of . . . stuff . . . went down.

After getting the funding from the investor, Ethan told Sarah that he had basically been in lust with her since the moment they met. Sarah was feeling old and out of touch, but he told her that she was incredibly smart and he felt dumb and tongue tied around her. They kissed, but didn’t go any further. Sarah stopped it, not wanting to take advantage of him in her vulnerable state.

I had always wondered if the show would pair Sarah with one of the boys. Actually I thought both would be after her and it would cause a war. Clearly that isn’t where they are going. However Sarah and Ethan . . . cute! I actually do hope they explore it later on, it could be really fun. It could also spell the doom of Greenatopia. Mixing business and pleasure did not workout well with Graham.

Nora had been clashing with Roger, the architect, over the design for her center. He came up with this grand avant garde thing. She thought it was too much and feeding into his ego, destroying it in front of him when he insulted her in front of his students by saying she was naive and didn’t have an understanding of architecture. Of course when she researched his works, she found out perhaps in a sense he was right. She apologized, but he also felt she had her own vision and as the client that should be respected too. They ended up compromising.

Roger took Nora to the party, which she insisted wasn’t a date, but PR for them both and her center (which Roger was making green friendly). Of course Nora being Nora got sloshed and admitted to Roger she really did like him. They kissed, but later she passed out before anything could happen. Poor Nora, how many times has she gotten drunk on a date and missed out on the good stuff because of it? Maybe she needs to not drink on dates. I am still not sure how I feel about these two as a couple. I just get the feeling Roger is only a guest star, so I can’t really get my hopes up for Nora and anyone she dates really. Not until they give someone a contract or cast a permanent love interest.

Justin meanwhile was feeling a bit neglected by Rebecca lately, as she became a working maniac. At the party though she booked the honeymoon suite in the hotel for the two of them to finally get some time together. The problem? It was a surprise and Justin didn’t know. He thought as usual she was working the party that night (she was pimping Ojai foods as part of local green foods). Thinking it was more work, he skipped it, though not on purpose.

Enter the trouble maker! A young girl approached Justin at a meeting about being his sponsee. He explained that AA didn’t allow sponsors and sponsees of different sexes, it was just too complicated. She pushed, he agreed to do it temporarily until she found a new sponsor. And thus began the trouble. It took all of two hours for her to end up calling him from a bar, and he spent the whole night of the party with her. Yeah, this girl is not only trouble, but I even wonder if she needs help really. I just got the feeling she was trolling AA meetings looking for a man!

Rebecca meanwhile ended up alone at the party and was hit on hardcore by Kyle. She turned him down though, saying she loved Justin. I was somewhat shocked on both fronts. First I thought Rebecca would cheat, just because she seemed to be doubting her relationship with Justin ever since that stupid fortune teller. Second, I was stunned Kyle would make a move on Sarah’s brother’s girlfriend. Yet again, mixing business with pleasure in a way. That’s a great way to start a war in a business, by stealing away your brother’s main squeeze.

Speaking of warring businesses. Tommy continued to not like what Holly was up to. Her latest move, behind his back, was to make the move to position Ojai as more of a distributor than a grower because of the economy. Tommy turned to Saul with a plan to boot Holly, but was told it was illegal and Saul wouldn’t do it. Tommy then used his smarts and basically played Rebecca like a fiddle. He fed her his ideas, made her think they were hers and encouraged her to take them to Holly. Of course Holly loved them and thought her daughter was a genius.

Please someone give me a barf bucket! You know if it came from Tommy she wouldn’t give it the time of day. Holly has maneuvered herself into the position she wants, the big boss! The only one she’ll listen to is Rebecca it seems, as she thinks her daughter is a genius. Clearly she wants to groom her to take over the Walker’s company. Where is that bucket again? Unfortunately for Tommy, Rebecca might not be a genius, but Holly is no dummy. It won’t be long before she catches on to Tommy’s game. Then it will be an all out war. Why do I get the feeling Tommy won’t win against Holly?

The final story was Robert running for Governor, which required gaining the support of two key old farts, I mean important people with money. Kitty became suspicious and asked Kevin to find out his plans, given who Robert was meeting with. Robert was furious Kevin talked to Kitty, as he had to trust him. He confided he was planning to run, but without the old fuddy duddies, he could kiss it goodbye. His reasoning thus was not to upset or alarm Kitty until he knew it could happen. Kevin agreed not to say anything, but made Robert promise to tell Kitty if it was a go. The fuddy duddies, one of them at least, wasn’t too impressed with Robert until Kevin told him off and put him in his place, making him see why he needed Robert. Kevin saved the day and Robert’s aspirations, though now Robert has to tell Kitty.

I loved Kevin not taking crap from the old farts in this episode, especially when they went hunting and how he screamed he kicked their asses so stop looking down upon him for being a democrat. However Robert, as usual, just irked me. From playing the politics game and kissing these old guys’ butts, to playing games with Kitty and lying to her face (actually making Kevin do it) that he wasn’t running for Governor . . . . well Robert is getting on my nerves! He’s going to ruin his marriage to Kitty if he keeps this up. When Kitty finds out, he better duck and cover!
