American Idol: You Must Love Me

American Idol: You Must Love Me

So tonight was Andrew Lloyd Weber night on American Idol, and I have to admit I’ve been looking forward to this night since it was announced. I was pleasantly surprised, as well as shockingly horrified.

Let’s get to the bad stuff right off the bat. Jason Castro doing “Memory” from “Cats” was the worst performance of the night. I admit I’m biased against him, but that was not a good song pick at all. Brooke White meanwhile chose “You Must Love Me” from Evita (actually written for Madonna for the movie version) and she forgot the words and started over. Not good for her. These are going to be the bottom two and if they aren’t I will be stunned.

For the good. Syesha, who has been struggling, did an amazing performance of the song “One Rock’n’ Roll Too Many” from “Starlight Express.” I have never seen this show, so it was new to me. She was really good though. The two stars of the night for me were David A. who did an amazing song with “Think Of Me” from “Phantom” and really was the only one I thought to pull off doing a Broadway song more as a pop song. I have to say I also loved Carly doing “Jesus Christ Superstar.” I got chills! Finally David C. did “Music Of The Night” from “Phantom.” He was good, but it didn’t click with me. He should have done something from “Joseph” of “Miss Saigon,” something with more of a rock feel.

  2. JCS actually is not one of my favorite weber musicals musically that is. It has a few good songs, but some very odd ones too. However that closing number I think is one of his best songs ever, and I can watch the end to the movie over and over and never get sick . . . i think it’s the dancing go go angels 🙂

I think why I liked her and yes even Syesha is because they went for fun songs.

  3. I’m not a Broadway fan and I recognized the musicals but not many of teh songs. I thought David Cook was really good. I was surprised by Syesha but I think she could still be in the bottom three. Brooke and Jason will be the bottom two and Jason will be the one going I do believe.
I caught Carly’s performance about halfway through and thought it was kind of weird and odd for her. Maybe it’s just where I caught it halfway through, but I wouldn’t be halfway surprised if she ended up in the bottom three but I kind of doubt it.
As for David A he did all right but I kindly agreed with Simon. It was good song but forgettable, but that’s just me. I’ve only caught a couple high school musicals but nothing of Webber’s. I still think Jason will be the one going though.

  4. I’m so sick of David A. Every week he stands in one spot without moving and stares at the camera like a doe in the head lights, not to mention that every frickin week he sounds the same. I really though with the Weber week he would be forced into doing something, anything new but look like yet again he will fly thru with a performance that has been the same since day 1 of the competition.

  5. For some people an amazing singing voice is enough, they don’t need anything else. That’s what I think Archie has, kind of reminds me of Josh Groban. But for others, that’s just boring.

  6. I have to agree that David A is not really a good perform. He does seem to stand in one spot, and what irritates me the most is that he closes his eyes. Though I admit he is a good singer. I still David C. is going to be the winner
