Samantha Who: Sam Gets a Proposal
Episode number two post-strike and Sam is trying to dig her way out of the gigantic hole she dug last week with Todd. Of course he is listening to the message as she leaves it – the comparison of not returning phone calls to pretending she and Todd had sex to get rid of Chloe probably had Miss Manners blushing! She tells the elevator full of people (guys?) “Trust me, the new girlfriend’s no prize either”. New Sam calls a spade a spade…
This morning is the annual meeting with Mr. Funk of Chapman and Funk. Mr. Chapman thinks his name is first because he works so hard and Sam points out she always thought it was alphabetical. Hmmm. Pan around the conference table and it seems Andrea has a thing for Mr. Funk. Ms. Cool as a cucumber/man-eater Andrea can’t even get a coherent word out when she comes face-to-face with the man. After all, who wouldn’t revert to a giggly, teenage girl when presented with a cute, newly-divorced billionaire? ? There’s just a slight glitch for Andrea… Mr. Funk has his sights set on Sam! He pops the question to Sam with the Rock of Gibraltar. While Old Sam probably would have completely gone with the engagement – just to keep the ring! – New Sam lets the cat out of the bag about her amnesia. (For those of you too young to remember REO Speedwagon, they were part of that “80’s Era” music the rest of us loved in high school. ?)
Sam is pouring her heart out to Dena about the events of the day in the Dog Park and Dena starts spouting about the romance novel she’s writing. The Heroine is based on Sam – a beautiful blonde amnesiac with a dark past and uncertain future. Is the heroine willing to risk everything she has to win the stable boy she loves or will she just give up and throw herself on some rocks. Sam says rocks. lol
Poor Sam still can’t give up on talking to Todd. She knows his routine so well shes standing behind him in the coffee shop leaving the message telling him what he’s doing. He’ll have his coffee and cinnamon roll and then run off the calories in the park like a girl. Ouch! New Sam tries to be honest about how she feels but Todd shuts her down.
And so her yearning for the stable boy, unrequited, our heroine headed through the dark of night – AKA a dejected Sam heads home to Mom and Dads.
And Mr. Funk is at Sam’s house. Wow. Wasn’t expecting that! Winston has asked her dad for her hand in marriage?? Low and behold, Winston is an old fashioned guy. Dad didn’t even have to think about the answer. Sam and her mom head for the kitchen and argue about why she won’t marry Winston and Dad pops in – he has to show Winston his jet. lol Sam walks Winston to the limo telling him that her mom will want her container back. ? It turns out Sam hasn’t seen snow since the accident. *Snap* and we have snow. Just when it looks like there might be a good night kiss Mom shows up for a photo op.
The next morning we’re in the conference room again and Sam laughs at Winston’s snow joke. Of course Andrea picks up on this and swoops down on a waiting Sam in the ladies room. Andrea lambasts her. Sam blurts out the events of the night before AND that there was a history with “Old Me”. Why Andrea would have expected anything less of Old Sam is a bit of a mystery.
More coffee and commiseration with Dena and Winston’s limo driver, Roger, walks in. Sam finally decides she can do whatever she wants and heads out to meet Winston. No marriage, but he can buy her a cup of coffee – NOT a franchise – some time. LOL. Cupcakes. Apparently Roger’s wife bakes them (he doesn’t share well with others) so the limo – not Winston – smells like cupcakes. Sam flashes to a memory with Andrea and realizes she has to go take care of something.
Andrea is sitting on the bench outside of The Sweet Sugar Bake Shop. Sam isn’t sure why she’s there but she knows that was their “spot” when they wanted to feel better but she didn’t remember why. “We sit here to smell the cupcakes. It’s like eating them but with none of the calories.” Gotta love girl logic when it comes to calories. Low and behold, they sabotaged jobs for each other because they didn’t want to lose one another. One VERY awkward hug and all is well again.
We close with Sam eating a cupcake amongst a sea of flowers. The doorbell rings and there’s a snow globe with a card reading “Snap and shake”. (Nice touch, Winston.) The bell rings again and in walks Todd. It seems the tabloid picture of Sam and Winston struck a nerve with Todd because that was one heck of a kiss he laid on Sam for a man who never wanted to see her again!
You know, this sure is a cute little show. I love Christina Applegate. And Sam and Todd’s chemistry ….wow!

I was almost ready for her to give Winston a shot because I was getting so irritated with Todd being SUCH the toad over Chloe, but he’s redeemed. For now. He may not want to admit it but he’s not over her one bit!

I’m with you. Especially after the snow scene with Winston. But I think New Sam is someone Todd will like a lot more than the Old Sam. How he doesn’t already notice that is beyond me. But I really like to see the scenes with Old Sam in them ….

I was starting to like Winston too. Looks like Todd just needed some competition!
