American Idol: This Week’s Thoughts

American Idol: This Week’s Thoughts

Posted by Dustin on 04.08.2008 at 9:40 pm

So tonight wasn’t a “theme” night (well apparently it was, it was “inspirational song night”) or a “mentor” night, mainly because tomorrow is “Idol Gives Back,” which will have enough star power as is. On Thursday we’ll find out who is going home this week.

Honestly, I don’t know who will go home. I have a feeling Syesha could be in trouble for attempting a Fantasia song, but I didn’t think it was terrible as there were worse. Contrary to the judges, whom I believe were drinking from Paula’s cup tonight, I HATED Jason’s performance of “Somewhere Over The Rainbow.” Big shock, he once again made it sound “Islandy.” I was waiting for him to tip-toe through the tulips!

Even though the judges felt Carly would be in trouble, David Cook I think was in fact the worst of the night. Just like there are certain artists (Whitney, Mariah) that the women shouldn’t even attempt, the same I feel goes for men. David Cook tried to sing an “Our Lady Peace” song (Innocent), and if you’ve never heard the band, well lets just say the singer has a voice that can’t easily be replicated.

I am a huge “Our Lady Peace” fan though, so I may be a bit biased. No I’m not, he killed the song. You can check out Our Lady Peace’s Innocent on YouTube (you’ll have to search for it, all the videos have embedding disabled)

  1. I hated Jason’s song for the first 10 seconds, but then I loved it, it was kind of weird.
For me the worst were David Cook and Carly. I think Carly will be in trouble along with Syesha. If they actually vote someone off this week.

  3. Good point about if they vote someone off. Didn’t they let everyone stay during the week of Idol Gives Back last year?
I like that version of somewhere over the rainbow so it was ok in my book. Between Carly and Syesha, my pick would be Syesha. She’s one that always sounds the same to me.

  4. I agree with typer, I like this version on Rainbow so it was OK. But Jason bothers me. Good looking boy, but he sounds the same every week. And what’s with his expressions? Open your eyes, boy!

I love Carly. Not particularly this performance, but she’s a great singer. Unfortunately I think Simon’s constant criticism is going to influence a lot of people.

Wasn’t thrilled with David Cook tonight either but no one’s perfect all the time. It’s not like he’ll be voted off.

And I know I may be killed for the but I am not an Archuleta fan. Yeah, he is cute as a button and yes, he does some good runs, but I cannot get past the gasps he does between each line. I don’t need to hear every breath a singer takes.

  5. I think that Jason did great. If you have ever heard the original version, he did it justice. I acctually liked Carly. I used to not be able to stand her but she is definitly growing on me.

  6. Too true Kelly – the eyes. Almost makes me wonder if he’s got a private stash of what’s going into Paula’s cup! lol

What will be interesting is to see what happens when folks have to go out of their safe zone – Carly and David Cook will be ok because they do that now, but I think it will be hard for some of the others.

  7. yes, typer. I liked Amanda (rocker chick) but you know, all her songs sounded the same. Same with Jason, same with Brooke. They’re good at what they do, but I don’t want EVERY song to sound the same.

Carly tries ballads one week and rock another. Always a strong voice, always beautiful. Maybe not always perfect but not the same every week. David C. almost always does rock, but it’s always mixed up. They keep me interested, you know. Those 2 give me chills. “Billie Jean” — MY GOD!

  8. I have a serious dislike for both Jason and David Cook. Jason seems to me like he is perma-stoned and David C. just seems cocky and arrogant. I likes David A last night but “angels” is my favorite song so I’m biased that way – though David is definately no Robbie Williams. I like Sayesha but I think I might be one of the only ones. Carly’s performance didn’t really do anything for me and she dresses horribly. Brooke is pretty and sings well but has no Wow factor. Kristy sang well this week which I was shocked at, but she’s still not my style. Michael is fine, not great but not bad. Also needs a little help with the outfits. All just my opinions.

  9. Im so ready to just stop watching this season. No matter how well Carly does Simon shits on her every week, yet both Davids and the wannabe island boy never seem to be treated as harsh, some times the judges actually ignore their flaws. Island boy and David sound the same every week and its just ignored. Why don’t they just admit that thru production they are just as willing to tamper with the show for ratings like BB.

  10. I actually liked Syesha’s performance last night and was kinda shocked when I heard her high note. And Kristy shocked me as well, I halfway expected her not to be able to hit some of those high notes like she did. David C., Carly, & Michael did not impress me much. Jason, Brooke & David A. were okay in my opinion, and I didn’t agree that David A’s performance was his best of the season, he has had better performances. At this point, though, I hate to see any of them to go as I like them all.

  11. My pick for the bottom two are Carly and Syesha with Syesha being sent home. I actually like David Cook but I don’t think he will be in the bottom three. It’s possible Michael Johns could end up in the bottom three, but at this point I’m not really sure, it could even me Brooke. For some reason during her song I kept thinking that I had heard that song before in a more upbeat version. I think I’m thinking of a different song with some of the same lyrics. Anyway I completely tuned out during her performance.

  12. LOL I found your tiptoe analogy funny and so right! Although I adored it in my own weird way. Now, this is where I get all soapy… Last days of my moms life, she sang that song out at a moment of confusion. She started the song in a mellow way and finished it on such a humourous way that she managed to make us laugh although we were so sad to see her sick. Everytime I see a rainbow, I think of her! Everytime I hear that song, I think of her! So, yeah, I’m biaised! LOL

Anyway, I thinkg Sayesha could be the one going. Country girl is growing on me. I figure, if the Pickler girl can have an album out, so can she! She’s a much better singer.

As for David, I can imagine all the grandmas, voting for him. Cute, cute, cute!!!!
