American Idol 7: The 80s Were A Lot More Fun Than This!
If you are on the West Coast, as usual, this will spoil it for you . .. so stop reading!
First up, I have to say I’m a little tired of hearing Ryan Seacrest tell us how this season is the best yet with the best talent. No Ryan, it’s not! When I’m pretty sure David Archuleta and Carly Smithson will be the final two in the end, something is kinda wrong!
Having grown up in the 80s and loving that much as much as I do the 70s, I was once again disappointed in a big way, especially with the song choices. More than ever I think someone is steering them and certain songs are off limits. Where was Madonna? Michael? Prince? Hell where was Culture Club? Some contestants made great choices, once again though I questioned why anyone would pick some of the songs others picked. I’m also wondering if Phil Collins and Celine Dion are getting royalties for their songs being used as people seem to be singing their stuff by the boatload!
Tonight’s show opened up with Blake Lewis performing his song “How Many Words” on the brand new stage.
They then moved onto the recaps and then the eliminations. Gone this week are Kady Malloy, Luke Menard, Asia’h Epperson and Danny Norriega are going home.
Beginning next week now that we are finally to the top 12, I will post polls every week in the side bar to vote. Let’s see how close we match what America is thinking!
Anyone know enough about the record Co that Simon is part of to take a guess? Based on the comment on the results show tonight about “getting access” to Lennon and McCartney I can’t help but think it is a royalties and also a who can they get to come in and coach thing. He’s got 10 years on me and as I recall he had something to do with launching Britney. He may not be the friendliest guy around but he knows does seem to know what’s going to sell.

I don’t think he was in on Britnet. I think that was Jive records down in Fla? The same company that did NSynch.
Simone is responsible for The Spice Girls though 🙂

I actually agree the talent is much better this season….at least on the boys side

Guys I would agree are the better talent. I think when we get down to 6 or 8 it will be about a 60/40 guy/girl ratio and that’s when we’ll really see what’s what.
Dustin, I think you’re right about the Spice Girls. Maybe he had something to do with a Britney record or something? Can’t remember quite what the tie is with him to Clive Davis – if any – in that respect, but from what I remember he was pretty much IT for Motown for a while I think.

I’m pretty sure Michael Jackson and Madonna probably own their own music. Michael Jackson also owns a good deal of the Beatles’ music, for adventure. So if you want to publicly perform any of his stuff or the Beatles songs he owns, you have to ask him for permission. Maybe they asked and he said no.

I live in Utah so David Archuleta is BIG news here. One of the local stations was interviewing him and asked him about song choices. He said song choices were really hard because they often get told they can’t sing the ones the want to sing. So it sounds like there are definitely restrictions.

Simon Fuller was the manager of the Spice Girls but I’m not sure if Simon Cowell was involved. Simon Fuller is also a producer of this show and I think they have a lot of projects together. They also have similar hair.
I’m guessing they don’t have rights to a lot of music and that’s why the song choices are so BLAH. I think all four that went home yesterday deserved to go home, along with some others but like I’ve said before only 4 could go home. I agree that the music from the 80s and the 70s should have been better and I continually ask myself why do people sing Celine Dion and Whitney Houston songs? They are the kiss of death – no one can sing like they do so please don’t try. And frankly I’m not a huge fan of either artist so don’t try for that reason as well. I hope next week picks better music, it’s nice to at least be able to know the song that they are sucking at. I think everyone this week was a bit of a disappointment.

Did Michael Jackson lose the Beatles stuff in the whole financial mess trying to hang on to Never Never Land? Maybe that’s how they were finally able to get a hold of the rights.
I bet there is also something about who wrote vs. who performs in there too. There was the Carol someone last year who was a coach and she writes for a BUNCH of people so they sang stuff she wrote regardless of who had recorded it.

I do believe Michael sold his claim to the beatles album in order to pay off some debt. This sounds like something I remember hearing (and I think Paul bought them back)
03.07.2008 at 6:55 pm
hmm if that’s true, do you think Paul could be a guest judge this season?

I had to do some googling. It seems there was a lot of talk of him selling as he’s in such financial trouble. However there is some clause in the whole songbook that come May of this year he loses any kind of exclusivity he holds. He knew this going into buying it. So I’m confused as to what is going on lol.

My guess is that it’s going to be hard to tell who goes home when they get to the top 8. I think that David Hernandez and Chikezie will be the first 2 guys to go as for the girls I think it could be Syesha and Ramiele. Mostly I’m just going on screen time and personality with these, though it depends on if they get any better.

Does anyone know who the “coach” is this week?
You’re right Dustin. It is pretty confusing about who has what with the rights for Michael/Sony.
Curious. How does everyone feel about the instruments now that we’re down to 12?
