Writers Strike Officially Begun

Posted by Dustin on 11.05.2007 at 12:06 pm

The Writers Guild of America officially went on strike at 12:01am this morning. This is the first strike in almost 20 years, the last one was in 1988 and lasted 5 months and cost the industry 500 million dollars back then.

  1. Anyone know of any online articles that overview the issues behind this strike?

  2. You can probably find tons on yahoo, but the main issue is that the writers aren’t getting any cut for the shows being sol on DVD, itunes, cellphones, netplays etc . . . which is where a lot of the money for TV shows nowadays come from.

  3. Anyone else get the feeling that this is the last nail in the Jericho coffin? Even if the few esp. they did film go over well with no new scripts to be produced i think its gonna be a causality.

  4. CBS would be stupid to let Jericho die as a result of this.

The sad truth though is this, most of the tv shows from this season are in danger. With the shorter tapes they are now doing, it use to be that a full season was always taped, now they are only really taping maybe 5 or 6 episodes. So any show that has not shown strong promise, is not going to be back.

I dont know how the last one effected the soaps, but this time I think it is going to be worse. Most of the networks are looking for excuses to get rid of the soaps that they were not with the last one.

If I remember my reading correctly, few of the shows have yet gotten their full season pick ups…. So I think this is going to be another lost season, and struggling shows of any kinda are going to go away

  5. I’m trying to find it, but I read an article on TVguide.com yesterday that, I believe, said that Jericho was going to be fine — it would air in its entirety because they had the scripts already.
